Hoyer Statement on the Passage of Legislation to Fund the Government Through January 19

December 21, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed short-term legislation to fund the government through January 19:

"Once again, Republicans in the House of Representatives have ignored their responsibility to govern, and opted to kick the can down the road. Instead of completing their work on time and working with Democrats to fund the government in a responsible manner, Republicans have yet again passed legislation to fund the government for the short term. While I am glad that Republicans have not shut down the government, funding the government for just weeks at a time is not a responsible or sustainable way to govern, and Marylanders deserve better.

"Republicans in Congress continue to ignore the most pressing issues facing families in Maryland, and across the nation. Instead of bringing the bipartisan DREAM Act or legislation to reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program to the Floor of the House of Representatives, they wasted time passing their partisan tax bill, which will raise taxes on thousands of hardworking middle class families in our state. I will continue to urge my colleagues across the aisle to join with Democrats and work in a bipartisan manner to responsibly fund the government and get things done for our constituents."
