Hoyer Statement on Passage of the House Republican Tax Bill

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed the House Republican tax bill:

“If enacted, the House Republican tax bill passed this afternoon by the House of Representatives would have severe economic consequences on thousands of families in Maryland. The House Republican plan would force middle class families in our state to pay more each year, explode the deficit by adding $1.7 trillion to the debt, and cut taxes for the wealthiest while leaving hardworking families behind. Additionally, the Republican bill would disproportionally hurt taxpayers in our state by forcing individuals to pay $430 million more in personal income tax annually once implemented. This bill is bad for Marylanders, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject this partisan legislation.

“If House Republicans were serious about addressing tax reform, they would work with Democrats in a fiscally responsible manner to reform our nation’s tax code. I will continue to urge my friends across the aisle to abandon their partisan bill, and join Democrats in working to enact real tax reform that doesn’t come at the expense of middle class families.”
