Hoyer Statement on the Passage of the Conference Report for the Republican Tax Bill

December 19, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after voting against the conference report on the Republican tax bill:

"The Republican tax bill passed today by the House of Representatives will raise taxes on thousands of middle class families in Maryland while giving tax cuts to the wealthiest in our state. If that weren't bad enough, the Republican bill explodes the deficit by $1.5 trillion over the next ten years – a bill that our children and grandchildren will have to pay. This bill is not fiscally responsible, and will have long-term economic consequences for our state.

"If Republicans were serious about tax reform, they would have worked with Democrats in a bipartisan manner to make real changes to help working families. I'm disappointed that this bill passed the House of Representatives, and I will continue to urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject this unsustainable and irresponsible legislation."
