Hoyer Statement on OPM Data Breach

June 5, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today on the data breach reported by the Office of Personnel Management:

"I am deeply concerned about this data breach that the Office of Personnel Management reported today. That the personal information of millions of dedicated and hard-working federal employees was compromised, potentially as the result of a foreign, state-sponsored cyberattack, is extremely disconcerting and indicative of the cyber threats our nation is facing. We must do everything we can to defend against cyber threats both in government and in the private sector.

"Federal employees serve the American people, very often for lower pay and longer hours in positions of enormous responsibility and impact. I am proud to represent many of them in Maryland's Fifth District, and I will continue to advocate for measures that safeguard their personal information. I will be monitoring developments closely in this case as the investigation moves forward."

The Office of Personnel Management has provided additional information, including the notification process for those impacted by this breach, at this link.
