Hoyer Statement on James Webb Telescope at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Working with Ranking Member Fattah, Maryland Delegation to Protect Investments in Science Research, Save Local Jobs
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after meeting with Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, after the Subcommittee passed a bill that would terminate the James Webb Space Telescope:
"I am disappointed that the Fiscal Year 2012 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill makes significant cuts to the James Webb Space Telescope at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This cut will have a dramatic impact on local jobs here in the Fifth District and threatens the future of science research.
"I met with Ranking Member Fattah this afternoon, and we discussed how we can work with Republicans to preserve this vital investment in our space program. I have also spoken with Chairman Wolf, and expressed my deep concern about this cut and urged the Committee to reconsider their decision as they proceed to Full Committee markup next week."
