Hoyer Statement on HUD's Funding Announcement for Homeless Veterans

December 8, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced a second round of HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program (HUD-VASH) recipients for Maryland. HUD allocated 21 of the vouchers valued at $198,000 to Southern Maryland to be used for housing homeless veterans in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties.

"I'm pleased that the 21 HUD-VASH vouchers awarded today to the Calvert County Housing Authority will provide nearly $200,000 to help combat homelessness among veterans throughout Southern Maryland's tri-county area. These vouchers will help us get homeless veterans and their families off the streets and into affordable housing. These vouchers are given out based on the results from the annual ‘Point-in-Time' survey, which I was proud to kick-off last December in Southern Maryland. This partnership between the federal Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs (VA) is an important tool in a critical effort. In addition to providing housing assistance, the HUD-VASH program offers veterans the opportunity to meet with case managers and clinicians through the VA. I will continue to work with the Maryland Delegation to push for measures that help get veterans the support they need as they transition back home."
