Hoyer Statement on Hearing on WMATA's SafeTrack Plan and Financial Situation
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after the House Committee on Oversight & Government Reform's Subcommittee on Government Operations held a hearing to discuss the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's SafeTrack plan and financial situation:
"While today's hearing focused on the SafeTrack plan to address the most immediate maintenance needs, WMATA still has more work to do to make the system safe and reliable for its riders. However, maintenance alone will not solve WMATA's problems. To fully reform WMATA, not only must there be changes to WMATA's organization and operations, but a sustainable funding source must be established. I will continue to work with General Manager Paul Wiedefeld, the jurisdictions, and my colleagues in Congress to support reforms and funding solutions that regain the trust of riders while improving the safety and reliability of WMATA."
