Hoyer Statement on Governor O'Malley's Comprehensive Proposal to Reduce Gun Violence
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after Governor O'Malley formally introduced public safety priorities for the 2013 Maryland Legislative Session, which includes a comprehensive proposal to reduce gun violence:
"I commend Governor O'Malley on his comprehensive approach to improve public safety and address gun violence in Maryland. The Governor's agenda will go a long way to keep our families and communities safe by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, strengthening licensing requirements, enhancing school safety, and expanding mental health safeguards and services. These are reasonable, common-sense proposals, and the Governor has taken steps to ensure the rights of responsible gun owners, such as our hunters and sportsmen, are protected. I urge the Maryland General Assembly to implement these proposals this Legislative Session, and look forward to working with federal, state, and local officials to prevent gun violence in our state and throughout our country."
