Hoyer Statement Following Luncheon with Greater Prince George's County Business Roundtable and Andrews Business Community Alliance

April 22, 2014

BOWIE, MD Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after joining the Greater Prince George's County Business Roundtable and Andrews Business Community Alliance to discuss issues important to the Prince George's County business community:

"Today, I joined the Prince George's County business community to discuss developments in our county and efforts on the federal level to help support the growth of local businesses. One of the most important efforts has been our work to bring the new, consolidated FBI headquarters here to Prince George's County. I have been proud to help lead the campaign, and with the backing of the entire Maryland Congressional Delegation, I believe we are in a very strong position to bring the FBI to Maryland. Lower costs, greater convenience, security, transportation options, and regional equity in distribution of federal facilities are all on our side. In addition, our business community is united in backing Prince George's County as the next home of the FBI headquarters. I was pleased to hear from business owners today about their excitement about our bid and their ideas to help promote it.

"We also discussed how budget tightening in Washington is affecting our military installations and defense contractors. We've seen our bases and businesses impacted by sequestration and uncertainty caused by Washington, and looking beyond the Fiscal Year 2015 budget, the sequester will drastically limit defense spending beginning again in Fiscal Year 2016. That's why I continue to urge my colleagues to replace the irrational policy of sequester with a balanced approach to deficit reduction. Doing so will provide certainty and stability for businesses in the region.

"I appreciate the role that the Greater Prince George's County Business Roundtable and Andrews Business Community Alliance continue to play in strengthening our local economy and we will continue to work together to make the best case for Prince George's County as a place for the federal government and businesses to invest and grow."
