Hoyer Statement on Defense Department Furloughs
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced the furlough implementation plan for civilian employees:
“I'm deeply disappointed that Department of Defense civilian employees, including 46,000 hardworking employees in Maryland, will begin receiving furlough notices in two weeks because Congress has failed to reach an agreement to replace the sequester. Our public servants, who support our men and women in uniform, do not deserve to experience furloughs, which will result in a pay reduction of 20% for the remainder of the fiscal year and come on top of the $114 billion that federal employees have already contributed towards deficit reduction. I’m also concerned by the impact these furloughs could have on the mission of our defense facilities here in Maryland, in particular Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Webster Field, Indian Head, and Joint Base Andrews, and on our nation’s military readiness.
“Instead of focusing on political message bills this week, Congress should be taking action to replace the entire sequester and stop these furloughs, as well as other irrational cuts that harm our economy and defense. Time is running short to prevent the adverse impact of furloughs on the defense community and working families in the Fifth District, and I continue to urge my colleagues to work together to replace sequestration, put our nation on a sound fiscal path, and restore certainty to families in Maryland and throughout the country.”
