Hoyer Statement on Bill-Signing for Maryland's Veterans Full Employment Act of 2013

April 17, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement after Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law Maryland’s Veterans Full Employment Act of 2013 for military credentialing and licensing. First Lady Michelle Obama attended the bill signing event this afternoon and delivered remarks.

“I commend the Maryland General Assembly and Governor O’Malley for ensuring the enactment of this important bill, which will allow our service members, veterans, and their spouses to transfer their military training, experience, and skills into civilian certifications, licenses, or academic credits that will help them find well-paying jobs. At a time when the unemployment rate for veterans remains unacceptably high, this is an important step to support the men and women who have served our nation.

“I want to thank First Lady Michelle Obama for attending the bill signing today, in addition to visiting the U.S. Naval Academy. The First Lady and Dr. Jill Biden have been champions for our service members and their families. Just two months ago, they called on all fifty states to take action to help our troops and their spouses get the credentials they need to successfully transition to civilian work by the end of 2015. Since then, thirteen states have already taken legislative or executive action to do so – including Maryland. Thanks to their leadership, more American heroes and their families will have greater opportunities to succeed.”
