Hoyer Statement on America Recycles Day

November 15, 2005
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement today in recognition of America Recycles Day (ARD), which is observed every November 15th:

"As stewards of the environment, we are responsible for preserving and protecting our resources for ourselves and for future generations.

"Congress needs to do more to explore renewable and alternative energy supplies, invest in greater efficiency to reduce consumption and advanced technologies to prepare the nation for our future energy needs.

"But we also need to renew our commitment to recycling.

"The more we recycle, the less garbage winds up in our landfills and incineration plants. By reusing aluminum, paper, glass, plastics, and other materials, we can save production and energy costs, and reduce the negative impacts that the extraction and processing of virgin materials has on the environment.

"According to the Board of Directors at ARD, the average American now generates more garbage than ever before—seven and a half pounds a day. This garbage goes mostly to landfills, where it's compacted and buried. As this waste stream continues to grow, so will the pressures on our landfills, our resources, and our environment.

"Recycling is an easy, common sense way to protect and preserve our environment. I am pleased that Prince George's County Department of Environmental Services has launched a campaign this month to promote recycling awareness and reward those residents who help build a cleaner, greener, community.

"I encourage all residents of the 5th Congressional district to do their part by recycling their garbage and purchasing recycled products when possible."
