Hoyer Statement After Delivering Remarks on WMATA at Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Board of Directors Meeting
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after attending the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Board of Directors meeting this afternoon to discuss the importance of working to improve the safety and reliability of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA):
"I was glad to have the opportunity to share my strong support for a Congressional resolution to establish the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission, currently under consideration in the House of Representatives, with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Board of Directors. The safety of passengers and employees must continue to be WMATA's number one priority; however, WMATA cannot become safer and more reliable without a dedicated source of funding.
"I thank Rep. Gerry Connolly and the other Members of our regional Delegation for their support of the Safety Commission. I am committed to continuing our work to ensure the prompt creation of the Safety Commission, and I thank the Board of Directors for the opportunity to discuss this important issue."
