Hoyer Statement on 2018 Open Enrollment for the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange announced that 153,571 Marylanders enrolled in health insurance during the 2018 open enrollment period:
"Despite an enrollment period that was cut in half by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Hogan Administration, nearly 154,000 Marylanders enrolled in affordable private health coverage during the 2018 open enrollment period, and daily enrollment in health plans increased 69 percent compared to the previous open enrollment period. Today's announcement by the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange further proves that the Affordable Care Act is working for Maryland families. Thanks to the health care law, the percentage of Marylanders without health insurance has hit a record low – just 6.1 percent. I join in thanking the health care providers, advocates, and navigators who worked hard to raise awareness of the shortened open enrollment period, and whose hard work made this year a success.
"Despite continued attempts by the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress to undermine the Affordable Care Act, more families in our state have access to quality, affordable health care. The 2018 open enrollment numbers are very encouraging, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to strengthen the Affordable Care Act so that it works for more Americans."
