Hoyer Statement on 2017 Open Enrollment for the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange

February 1, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after it was announced that more than half a million Marylanders applied for or re-enrolled in health coverage during the 2017 open enrollment period:

"Today's announcement by the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange that more than half a million Marylanders applied for or re-enrolled in health coverage during the 2017 open enrollment period is further proof of the positive impact the Affordable Care Act has had in our state and across the country. The marketplace established by the Affordable Care Act has provided access to quality, affordable health care for thousands of Marylanders, including the 158,000 Marylanders who enrolled in private coverage and nearly 350,000 who applied for Medicaid since the beginning of the 2017 open enrollment period. Efforts by Republicans in Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act without immediately offering a real replacement will do lasting damage to hundreds of thousands of Marylanders, and I will continue to work with stakeholders to oppose these efforts to Make America Sick Again."
