Hoyer Speaks with NTEU on the Impact of the Trump Shutdown on Federal Workers

January 14, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after a call with National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) President Tony Reardon on the impact of the Trump shutdown on the federal workforce:

"I appreciated speaking with President Reardon today about the negative consequences of the Trump shutdown on thousands of federal employees in the National Capital Region. The President shut down the government as a strategy to achieve what he otherwise cannot through the democratic process. In doing so, he is holding federal employees and the public they serve hostage. Thousands of Marylanders missed a paycheck on Friday as a result, and they are worried about how they are going to pay their mortgages, credit card, and other bills. That is shameful and immoral.

"I thank President Reardon for the work he is doing to advocate for our federal employees and the American people who depend on the services they provide. I will continue to call on Senator Mitch McConnell to take up funding bills passed by the House to reopen government and end the shutdown. The patriots who ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the American people do not deserve to be treated as pawns by this President. We must end this shutdown."
