Hoyer Secures Funding for FDA Expansion, Greenbelt Courthouse & Small Business Initiative

July 17, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - Last evening, the U.S. House passed the FY2010 Financial Services Appropriations bill containing funding for the FDA White Oak expansion project, the planned addition to the Greenbelt Federal Courthouse and a Small Business Initiative in Prince George's County. The project funding was included at the request of Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD).

"I am pleased to have secured funding for these investments in Prince George's County," stated Rep. Hoyer. "As we work to rebuild our economy, these investments will provide an additional boost to the region while meeting the needs of our Federal workforce at the FDA and the Judiciary."

Congressman Hoyer helped secure funding for the following projects:

FDA White Oak Expansion - $137,871,000
The FDA project at White Oak involves the consolidation of 18 different existing FDA facilities across the Greater Washington area into a state-of-the-art 130-acre campus where over 7,700 employees will eventually have offices. This installment of funding will be used to complete construction of critical anti-bioterrorism laboratories and office space.  To date, Rep. Hoyer has helped secure more than $841 million for the project.

"Consolidating FDA's offices and laboratories at White Oak will allow some of the world's top researchers to move out of dilapidated working conditions and into state-of-the-art facilities," stated Rep. Hoyer. "This installment of funds this will keep the FDA Headquarters Consolidation project on track and avoid future cost overruns and construction delays."

Greenbelt Federal Courthouse - $10,000,000
This funding will be used for the planning and design of an expansion of the U.S. Courthouse in Greenbelt, MD. The courthouse is close to exceeding the size constraints of the building and requires additional space to accommodate the expected arrival of four additional judges in 2014.

Small Business Initiative, Prince George's County - $150,000
The Small Business Initiative provides assistance to local, small and minority owned businesses. This investment will allow Prince George's County to increase the resources and assistance available to small businesses during a time when small businesses are struggling under the pressures of the current economic downturn.  Specifically, funding would be used to support technical improvements, three regional conferences and a countywide conference, as well as outreach to small businesses to help them sustain and thrive.

The House Financial Services Appropriations bill now awaits passage of the Senate companion legislation. In the next stage of the appropriations process, a House-Senate conference will meet to reconcile the differences so one bill can be brought to both chambers for a final vote.
