Hoyer: Republican Spending Bill Will Cost Maryland 13,500 Jobs

March 4, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement after the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee released a state-by-state breakdown showing that an estimated 13,500 Maryland jobs would be lost if H.R. 1 – the Republicans' extreme spending plan – were enacted:

"Today's analysis proves what Democrats and independent analysts have been saying for weeks: Republicans' spending bill will severely damage our economy here in Maryland, preventing it from continuing to grow and create jobs," stated Congressman Hoyer. "Democrats agree that spending cuts are necessary to tackle our deep budget deficit, but those cuts must be smart and targeted. Republicans' reckless plan would take jobs away from our hardworking citizens, end vital investments in economic growth and our security, and severely harm America's competitiveness. In order to meet our long-term fiscal challenges and keep our economy growing, we must find compromise that cuts spending without cutting investments in our future and costing Maryland jobs."

Today's analysis found that H.R. 1 will cut more than 13,500 jobs in Maryland by 2012, and nearly 700,000 jobs throughout the country.  In addition, nearly 2,900 community health center jobs will be eliminated in Maryland if the House-passed bill is enacted.  Other impacts to Maryland include:

  • Education Impact Under H.R.1

o   Pell Grants: The average Maryland undergraduate with Pell college tuition assistance will see their assistance cut by more than $650.

o   Head Start: More than 2,300 Maryland children will lose access to Head Start, an early education program that is proven to help students complete high school.

o   Workforce Development: Maryland could lose upwards of $37.5 million in job training investments under H.R.1, which would impact approximately 195,000 potential Maryland workers.

  • Public Safety Impact Under H.R. 1:

o   Byrne Justice Grants: Cuts $3.1 million in investments for Maryland.

o   Homeland Security Investments: Cuts nearly $2 million in investments for Maryland, hurting local law enforcement's ability to keep Maryland families safe.

o   WMATA: Cuts more than $13 million in Transit Security Grants, with the expected impact to Maryland Transit Administration totaling more than $7.5 million in Transit Security Grants.

o   Maryland Emergency Management: Cuts nearly $2.1 million in Port Security Grants, which undermines the agency's ability to keep our ports safe.
