Hoyer Remarks Following a Maryland Delegation Meeting with Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh

March 30, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – This afternoon, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) gave brief remarks following a meeting with Members of the Maryland Delegation and Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh. Below is a transcript of his remarks.

"We just got done with a meeting of the Maryland Delegation, a meeting with the Mayor of Baltimore Catherine Pugh. Many of us have known Catherine most of her life, and we were extraordinarily impressed with her presentation and with what she's accomplished in the short time she has been the Mayor of Baltimore.

"The city, like every city in America, faces challenges. But there are also opportunities, and it is clear that Mayor Pugh sees them as opportunities to enhance the lives of not only the residents of her city, but of the residents of our state.

"I do not represent a portion of Baltimore City, but I told the Mayor when I was in the Senate for twelve years, it was my premise then, and it remains my premise, that if the city is healthy, if the city is prosperous, if the city is successful, that our state will be successful. And I am pleased to have her here, and I look forward to working with her and congratulate her on the job she has already done. I know those who represent parts of the city will be extolling her virtues.

"So now let me recognize – he and I were elected to the legislature together a long time ago. He is now our senior United States Senator, and in my opinion, one of the best public servants that I have ever served with. And we are lucky in Maryland, but the country is lucky as well that Maryland has sent two extraordinary Members of the United States Senate, Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen. And I know they have a very close relationship with the Mayor as well, so let me introduce my colleague, friend, and senior Senator from the state of Maryland, Senator Ben Cardin."
