Hoyer Receives 2009 AARP Congressional Award for Leadership

WASHINGTON, DC - The AARP announced today its list of recipients for the 2009 Congressional Awards given to lawmakers who have been leaders on issues relevant to older Americans. Congressman Hoyer was recognized along with Senator Barbara Mikulski specifically for their leadership on preventing age discrimination and working to ensure equal rights for all workers. "There can be no tolerance for discrimination against older Americans or any American on the basis of age, gender, disability, nationality, race or religion," stated Rep. Hoyer. "I am honored to be recognized for the work this Congress has done to strengthen the rights of older workers, and all workers."

As one of its first acts, the 111th Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to strengthen laws prohibiting wage discrimination on the basis of age, among other individual characteristics.
