Hoyer: One Year Later, Democratic-Led Congress
"On November 7, 2006, Americans voted for change, putting Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate. One year later, we are delivering on our promise to lead this nation in a new direction. Since the inauguration of the 110th Congress in January, we have had a busy and successful 10 months, building an impressive list of accomplishments for the American people.
"We have passed legislation that strengthens our national security; that grows our economy and makes us more competitive; that addresses the needs of our families and communities; that preserves our planet and reduces our dependence on foreign oil; and that restores accountable, open and transparent government. And, we are restoring fiscal discipline to our federal government for the first time in six years. Our record of achievement includes passage of more than 90 pieces of major legislation, nearly 70 percent of which received bipartisan support.
"This impressive record however is just the beginning of Democrats' work on behalf of the American people as we continue to press ahead on priorities that have been blocked all too often by an out of touch President and his loyal Congressional accomplices.
"On this, the first anniversary of the election of the New Direction Congress, we reaffirm our commitment to continue fighting for the issues important to all Americans, from changing direction in Iraq and refocusing our fight against terrorists, to addressing pocketbook issues here at home, to ensuring that the nation we leave for our children is greater than the one we inherited.
"One year later, with significant progress to show, we continue our work to lead the nation in a New Direction and towards a greater America."
