Hoyer Meets with WMATA General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles

June 27, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) met with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Richard Sarles for an update on the local transit system.

"I want to thank Richard Sarles for joining me today to discuss efforts to increase the safety and reliability of Metro for millions of residents, commuters, and visitors," stated Congressman Hoyer. "Our regional economy depends on a strong Metro and making investments in our local infrastructure, and I am committed to ensuring we have the necessary resources as we move forward with the appropriations process."

At the request of Congressman Hoyer and the Washington Metro area delegation, the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill includes the fourth $150 million installment of the authorized $1.5 billion in dedicated federal funding for safety and capital improvements to Metro over ten years.  Last night, the House defeated an amendment to cut this funding by a vote of 160-243.
