Hoyer Meets with WMATA General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke
GREENBELT, MD – This afternoon, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) met with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke to discuss rider safety and restoring efficiency to Metro service.
"I was glad to meet Randy Clarke today and discuss the efficacy of our Metro rail," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "Thousands of people in my district depend on the Metro to get to work, to make important appointments, and to access the greater economic and social opportunities that the region has to offer. I've been closely monitoring the investigation following the challenges with 7000-series cars last fall, and while some riders experiences have improved, there is still a long way to go to fully recover and restore trust in the Metro.
"Strengthening the Metro is a priority for me. I have been hard at work to improve conditions, not just for the riders, but for the workers who show up every day and provide the best service possible to commuters. I was glad to help fund the Metro during the pandemic so that it could continue operating for essential workers and others who depended on its daily services and will keep fighting for funding that can improve the capabilities of WMATA. I was also pleased to secure $150 million annually for WMATA in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to invest in safety and upgrades through fiscal year 2030.
"I thank Randy for his leadership so far and his ability to hit the ground running on the challenges facing WMATA. I look forward to our new partnership and working together in the future."
