Hoyer Meets Virtually with CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres

February 8, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after meeting virtually with CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres this afternoon:

"I was glad to meet virtually with my friend CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres today to discuss the importance of taking action to address our broken immigration system this Congress, including protecting Dreamers and those with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in Maryland. The work CASA is doing to advocate on behalf of immigrant families in our communities is critically important, and I thank Gustavo for the work he and CASA are doing to protect families in our state.

"Immigrant families in Maryland spent four years living in fear under the Trump Administration. I'm glad that on day one of the Biden-Harris Administration, President Biden took action to safeguard Dreamers. Last Congress, I was proud to bring the Dream and Promise Act to the Floor, legislation to protect Dreamers by providing them with a pathway to citizenship and allow TPS holders the certainty to stay in this country. While President Biden has taken executive actions on immigration, Congress has much work to do to improve our broken immigration system. I look forward to working with President Biden, my colleagues in Congress, and CASA to improve our immigration system.

"Dreamers and TPS holders are our friends, neighbors, and coworkers. They've made integral contributions to our state and country, and it is essential that they are allowed to remain in their communities. I will continue to work alongside CASA to ensure that the immigrants' rights are strengthened and protected."
