Hoyer Meets with Interim Executive Director of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement to Discuss Efforts to Prevent Gun Violence

WASHINGTON, DC  – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) met with Lieutenant Joseph Akers of Bowie, Interim Executive Director of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement and a member of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence.

"Today, I met with Lieutenant Akers from the Fifth District to discuss efforts we can take to prevent gun violence in our community and throughout our country," stated Congressman Hoyer. "I thank him for taking the time to discuss reasonable, common-sense proposals that we can take to improve public safety and address gun violence, while respecting all Americans' Second-Amendment right. I look forward to working with him, the National Law Enforcement Partnership, and our federal, state, and local officials to keep our families and communities safe."

The National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence is an alliance of law enforcement leadership organizations working to address gun violence.
Congressman Hoyer and Lieutenant Akers discussed actions the Partnership supports including requiring background checks for all firearm purchasers; improving the
National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS); banning new semi-automatic assault weapons; and limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines to ten rounds. These proposals mirror the recommendations of House Democrats' Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, led by Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-5)
