Hoyer Meets with Hispanic Leaders From Maryland

July 16, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC Congressman Steny Hoyer met on Capitol Hill with nearly 30 leaders from the Hispanic community in Maryland yesterday to discuss issues important to Latino families. Congressman Hoyer was joined by Representative Bob Menendez, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and the highest ranking Hispanic member of Congress, and Representatives Al Wynn and Chris Van Hollen. Nearly 4 percent of the population of the state of Maryland is Latino.

I appreciate all of you joining me here so that we can hear from you about issues on which the Congress ought to be focused and discuss how we can assist your efforts, said Congressman Hoyer. In June, I met with a number of you in Prince George's County and I think it is important that we continue the dialogue we started at that meeting.

I am also pleased to be joined by Congressman Bob Menendez, Chair of the Democratic Caucus, and the highest ranking Latino in the Congress. Rep. Menendez has provided keen insight to our caucus about the issues that are important to you and your communities. We want to hear what you are concerned about and discuss real ways to address these issues, Hoyer added.

Making sure that Hispanic businesses have access to capital, fighting to raise achievement and reduce disparities in our schools, and improving the way that immigrants can obtain U.S. citizenship are critical issues that as a nation we must be focused on. The United Negro Fund says, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. America does not have one individual mind to waste. We must make sure that every individual is utilized to their best ability and talent and I'll continue to work with you to this end.
