Hoyer Joins Accokeek Foundation and the National Park Service to Celebrate Preservation Milestones
ACCOKEEK, MD –Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today joined the Accokeek Foundation and the National Park Service for a sign dedication to commemorate the Accokeek Foundation's 60 year history of historic preservation and stewardship through collaboration and innovation. The event also recognized the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. In attendance at the celebration were Bob Vogel, Director of the National Park Service National Capital Region, and Piscataway-Conoy and Piscataway Indian Nation tribal leaders.
"I was pleased to celebrate 60 years of stewardship at Piscataway Park today – which coincides with the centennial of the National Park Service,"said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "On this anniversary, we gather to honor former Congresswoman Frances Payne Bolton for her visionary actions to preserve Piscataway Park. We also honor all those who have given their time, energy, and advocacy toward making sure that Piscataway Park will forever be a site of conservation, recreation, and education."
"I want to thank the Accokeek Foundation for its extraordinary leadership and the hard work it undertakes on a constant basis to protect this land and its viewshed, home to so much Maryland history," continued Congressman Hoyer. "In Congress, I've been proud to lead efforts to defeat bills that would increase pollution and make it harder to protect natural environments. I'm going to keep working with my colleagues in the Maryland Congressional Delegation and with state officials to ensure that Maryland has all the resources it needs to protect and conserve vital natural landscapes in our state so that their history and splendor will be there for future generations to enjoy. I look forward to continuing our work together to make sure that every person has access to that ‘wonder-book of nature' and the richness it adds to our lives, to our communities, and to our country."
The Accokeek Foundation's mission is to cultivate passion for the natural and cultural heritage of Piscataway Park and commitment to stewardship and sustainability.
