Hoyer Hosts Virtual Roundtable with Fifth District Leaders on Emergency Rental Assistance

August 18, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) hosted a virtual roundtable with Fifth District county and state government leaders to discuss how funding provided through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program is helping families in Maryland's Fifth District:

"The COVID-19 pandemic has caused economic hardships across our state, leading too many families to fall behind on rent and struggle to keep their bills paid," said Congressman Hoyer. "Over the last 16 months, Congress has provided billions of dollars in relief to help stave off evictions and prevent housing insecurity across the country. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan passed by Congressional Democrats, funding for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program was expanded, providing states and local governments with $47 billion to assist renters and landlords."

"As Maryland families continue to struggle during this pandemic, today's roundtable that I hosted was an important opportunity to receive updates from Fifth District county and state government leaders on their work to provide renters and homeowners with this emergency assistance," continued Congressman Hoyer. "Maryland received $401 million for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program through the Consolidated Appropriations Act and another $352 million through the American Rescue Plan. While I am relieved that the Biden Administration has extended the eviction moratorium through October 3, I will keep pressing organizations at every level to ensure this funding can swiftly reach the households that need it most. I am grateful for the leadership of housing officials and leaders across the Fifth District, and I will continue to advocate alongside them so that our families – both renters and local landlords that rely on their building for income – can feel more security when the first of the month comes around."
