On Democrats' Message Ahead of the State of the Union:

"I think collectively what we are making a statement [on] is, there are some important issues we ought to deal with. We ought to deal with them constructively, and yes, collectively if we can. Because that's really the only way they are going to get addressed in a positive way."

On President Trump's State of the Union Address:

"It was not a speech that will bring the parties together. It wasn't a speech about we can agree on this, that, and the other. For instance right now, the government being shut down or not depends upon making some sort of compromise with respect to border security. He spent 20 minutes, frankly, of his demagoguery, in my opinion, about immigration in the worst possible terms."
