June 11, 2015

WALDORF, MD Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) delivered remarks tonight at the 15th Annual Leading Edge Awards, which recognizes businesses and individuals that spur and strengthen economic growth in Southern Maryland. The Leading Edge Awards are presented each year by the College of Southern Maryland in partnership with the Charles County Technology Council, the Calvert County Department of Economic Development, the Corporate Center at the College of Southern Maryland, the Small Business Development Center, and the College of Southern Maryland Foundation.

"I'm proud to celebrate these outstanding awardees and the enormous opportunities we have to attract business development and jobs to Southern Maryland in the years ahead," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "We've already come a long way, and I've been proud to support economic diversification and the work of tonight's sponsors to advance it. The College of Southern Maryland, in particular, has been engaged in a sustained effort to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and it has been building partnerships with local employers to create career pipelines for workers with in-demand skills. I look forward to continuing to work with the college and with local businesses to make Southern Maryland an even more attractive place for development and the creation of good, high-wage jobs."

Rep. Hoyer also presented Don Smolinski with the 2015 "CEO of the Year" Award for his contributions to the Southern Maryland economy and its communities. Don Smolinski has launched several successful businesses since the 1960's, and currently owns and operates ten businesses, including the Harley Davidson Dealership in Hughsville, Star 98.3 FM, Henson Creek Assisted Living, and the Clinton and Waldorf Metal Companies.
