Hoyer: Congress Working to Pass 3.5 Percent Adjustment for Civilian Federal Employees
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement in response to the alternative pay plan issued by the Bush Administration today calling for an average 3 percent federal pay raise for federal civilian employees in 2008. Legislation including a 3.5 percent adjustment for federal employees is expected to pass through Congress.
"A 3.5 percent pay raise for federal civilian employees has the support of both the House and the Senate. I am confident that when Congress returns next month to complete our legislative work for the year, we will secure the 3.5 percent pay raise that our hard-working federal workforce deserves.
"Furthermore, I am extremely disappointed that the President has rebuffed the principle of pay parity for all federal employees. Military and civilian employees work side by side to provide essential services to our nation, and their contributions ought to be adequately recognized."
