Hoyer Celebrates So. Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee's 40th Anniversary

October 8, 2005
Waldorf, MD – Congressman Steny Hoyer addressed the Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action Committee (SMTCCAC)'s 40th anniversary celebration in Waldorf today. SMTCCAC is a private non-profit organization which aims to combat poverty in Southern Maryland, and was created under the Economic Opportunities Act of 1964. It is one of 1,100 Community Action Committees (or Agencies) (CAAs or CACs) nationally that serve as anti-poverty advocates for low-income programs, and employs 170 people in Southern Maryland.

"The Tri-County Community Action Committee has made admirable and important contributions to Southern Maryland over the last four decades. The breadth of the services they offer to the community has made it possible for them reach some of the most vulnerable citizens, and to make positive changes in their lives," Hoyer said.

Hoyer was joined at the event by Swynice Hawkins, SMTCCAC's President, Mark Jones, SMTCCAC's Vice Chairman, and several elected officials from Southern Maryland. In addition, three citizens, Marguerite Johnson of Calvert County, Eva Chesley of Charles County, John Lancaster of St. Mary's County, as well as the Rotary Club of St. Mary's County were honored at the event for their work with SMTCCAC and in the community.

SMTCCAC is the only Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Counseling Agency in the Tri-County region, and provides a wide range of services to local citizens including: Head Start and AmeriCorps Service Projects, job training programs, health services and a medical adult day care center, projects to help needy families with their home heating costs and to help them achieve home ownership, and transportation services to help people fully function in the community.
