Hoyer Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Medicare in Bowie
BOWIE, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) joined senior service providers, caregivers and leaders today from throughout Prince George's County to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Medicare, which was signed into law on July 30, 1965. The Executive Director of the White House Conference on Aging, Nora Super, also attended the event to highlight issues presented during the recent Conference to improve the quality of life for older Americans.
"I'm pleased to celebrate 50 years of Medicare, which has provided guaranteed health insurance for millions of seniors and enabled them to rest more easily in their golden years," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "In 2010, I was proud to play a leading role in the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, which has strengthened Medicare for current and future beneficiaries. Today, our nation's seniors also want to ensure that their retirement is secure and that Social Security is solvent for the long-term. This is why President Obama and Democrats in Congress are dedicated to the task of protecting Social Security and Medicare as well as investing in programs to protect seniors against discrimination and ensure a higher quality of life. I'm committed to working toward even greater opportunities for our seniors to enjoy their golden years in health, comfort, security, and the peace of mind that the next generation will be able to make it in America as they did."
Representatives from the Prince George's County Department of Family Services, Prince George's County Advisory Committee on Aging, and the Prince George's County Senior Provider Network also made presentations today on services offered to seniors in the area.
