Hoyer on BRAC Decisions Today

August 25, 2005
WASHINGTON - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement regarding decisions made by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission at a hearing today:

“I am very pleased that the Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted today to maintain 43 jobs at Indian Head, as well as to move energetics work from Picatinny in New Jersey to Indian Head.

“These decisions recognized that Indian Head was officially named by the Department of Defense as a Center of Excellence for Energetics and that this military installation clearly has more energetics work than any other. This decision not only preserves but enhances the local workforce by moving the Army energetics work to Indian Head.

“It was already clear that Pax River and Indian Head were winners in this round of base closings, however today’s vote to move jobs from Picatinny to Indian Head is the icing on the cake for Southern Maryland. This success is the result of ten years of hard work by local elected officials and the defense community since the last round of base closings.”

The Department of Defense had recommended that 43 direct (33 indirect) jobs be moved from Indian Head to Picatinny in New Jersey. The preliminary numbers of jobs moving from Picatinny to Indian Head is estimated to be as high as 50 to 100 positions.
