Hoyer Attends Ribbon Cutting for Melwood's Solar Energy Conversion Project & eRecyling Program

July 7, 2015

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) delivered remarks this afternoon at a ribbon cutting ceremony for Melwood's Solar Energy Conversion Project and eRecyling Program in Upper Marlboro. Melwood is a nonprofit that creates jobs and opportunities to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

"I was pleased to attend today's ribbon cutting at Melwood, an organization that is doing very important work throughout the Greater Washington Area, providing skills and dignity to so many," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "Melwood played a critical role in advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which I was proud to sponsor in 1990. There is still much work ahead, but at Melwood that work is moving forward at full strength, with programs that are helping hundreds of people every year find jobs, learn new skills, and live more independently."

"I'm proud that Melwood made the trailblazing decision to become a solar power pioneer by investing in this new solar photovoltaic system," continued Congressman Hoyer. "These solar panels will help Melwood save a million dollars over the next 20 years, and that means more money to help those it was founded to serve. It also means we're taking another step toward a cleaner and more sustainable Prince George's County. As our country and the world deal with the impact of climate change, it is important to remember that reducing carbon pollution begins at the local level. Today's ribbon cutting marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter at Melwood. I've been privileged to work for many years to advance Melwood's mission, and I look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come."

Melwood also celebrated the launch of its Electronics Recycling Solutions Program that will save additional money for programs and help promote the recycling and reuse of computer, phone, and electronics parts in the area. The program has already created 23 jobs for individuals with differing abilities.
