May 16, 2014

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) attended the 42nd annual senior recognition event sponsored by the Prince George's County Department of Family Services, Aging Division in recognition of Older Americans' Month.

"I was pleased to join Fifth District residents today to celebrate Older Americans' Month and to recognize the incredible work that the Prince George's County Department of Family Services does for our communities," stated Congressman Hoyer. "We must never forget our seniors, and Prince George's County has made that its mission. At the federal level, I continue to work to protect the Medicare and Social Security guarantee and ensure that the Affordable Care Act continues to be implemented in a way that benefits all Americans. I will continue to fight efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, make certain that programs that serve seniors are protected, and ensure we continue to honor and respect older Americans."

The Affordable Care Act is making a significant difference in the lives of Maryland seniors:

·         In the first eleven months of 2013, over 547,000 Marylanders with Medicare have received at least one preventive service at no out of pocket cost.

·         In the first ten months of 2013, nearly 46,000 seniors and people with disabilities have saved on average $916 on prescription medications.
