Hoyer Attends Opening of the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter's New Center in White Plains

October 2, 2013

WHITE PLAINS, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) attended the opening of a new center in White Plains for the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter.

"I was pleased to join the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter and others for today's ribbon cutting," stated Congressman Hoyer. "The Association has been tireless in their efforts for a cause I have been proud to stand up for in Congress – not only with regard to raising awareness but also securing funding for research and treatment."

"However, with the sequester and continued uncertainty over next year's budget, funding for research and the development of new treatments for Alzheimer's is at risk," continued Congressman Hoyer. "That's why we need to raise our voices loudly to demand that Congress pass a budget that does not forget about the important goal of finding a cure. With over 5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer's – and that number expected to rise in the coming years – this cause has never been more urgent. I will continue to stand with the Association and other stakeholders in this effort to end Alzheimer's and provide comfort and hope to the families affected by it."

The Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter supports approximately 80,000 people with dementia in the region, providing hope, support, information, and training for health care professionals. The White Plains Center will provide those affected with a 24/7 hotline; support and education for people with the dementia and affected friends and family; support groups; safety programs; professional training; and legislative advocacy.
