Hoyer Attends Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner

June 11, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Tonight, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) attended the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner. The Chamber is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. At the event, Congressman Hoyer discussed the need for a big, balanced deficit reduction deal; his Make It In America plan to create jobs and strengthen domestic manufacturing; and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act for small businesses in Maryland.

“I want to thank the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to discuss what Congress is doing to address our fiscal and economic challenges and to help businesses grow right here in Maryland,” stated Congressman Hoyer. “One of the most serious issues plaguing our economy right now is uncertainty, and Congress has a responsibility to take action so American businesses can go back to doing what they do best: thriving in a competitive marketplace. The best way to do that is by enacting a big, balanced deficit reduction agreement that replaces the sequester while reflecting our priorities and encouraging economic growth.”

“Congress can also help Maryland businesses compete by taking action on the Make It In America plan I’m leading to create new jobs and opportunities that sustain and grow a strong middle class,” continued Congressman Hoyer. “Make It In America places a particular emphasis on manufacturing – because a thriving manufacturing base in our country has always been a recipe for skilled jobs – but Make It In America legislation will yield benefits across all sectors of our economy and will help businesses right here in Bowie compete and grow. I’m pleased the business community in Maryland is among the most dynamic and innovative, and serves as a model for how federal, state, and local officials and business leaders can work together to create the best conditions for growth and long-term success.”

Congressman Hoyer concluded: “Maryland is also leading the way in its implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Leaders in Annapolis and Washington are listening to our small business owners and working together to make sure that it is implemented in a way that helps small businesses insure employees at a reasonable cost and assists in meeting that cost. To help pay for affordable coverage for employees, around 66,000 Maryland small businesses will be eligible for a tax credit that will increase from 35% to 50% next year. I will keep working with the Chamber as the implementation process continues, and I want to thank them for all they are doing to create opportunities here in Prince George’s County.”

The Make It In America plan, launched three years ago, aims to strengthen American manufacturing and create well-paying, middle-class jobs. Congressman Hoyer unveiled an updated Make It In America plan for the 113th Congress that focuses on four key priorities: adopting and pursuing a national manufacturing strategy; promoting the export of U.S. goods; encouraging businesses to bring jobs and innovation back to the U.S.; and training and securing a 21st century workforce.
