Hoyer Applauds Bowie State University for Leading in Cybersecurity Education
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) applauded Bowie State University for receiving $1.1 million as part of a $25 million grant over the next five years to support cybersecurity education. The grant, which Congressman Hoyer supported in a letter to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will establish the Cybersecurity Workforce Pipeline Consortium with funding from the Minority Serving Institutions Partnerships Program that is housed in DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration.
"As part of theCybersecurity Workforce Pipeline Consortium, Bowie State University will expand its cybersecurity research and curriculum to continue engaging students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "This program will also improve skill development for students by increasing opportunities for them to gain academic and hands-on training in cybersecurity. I am looking forward to seeing students at Bowie State University become the next leaders of their generation in the cybersecurity industry."
"Enhancing our capacity to train students for cybersecurity careers and participating in advanced research will continue to place Bowie State University and the state of Maryland in the forefront of global technology innovation," said Bowie State University President Mickey L. Burnim. "Building on our already strong computer science and computer technology programs will allow more students to enter the cybersecurity field."
The consortium consists of 13 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), two national labs, and a K-12 school district. Bowie State is the only HBCU in Maryland to be one of the recipients of this award. Bowie State University will also strengthen its partnerships with Maryland government and the cybersecurity industry, including the U.S. Department of Defense, Northrop Grumman, and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
