Hoyer Announces Winner of the 2012 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition

June 20, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced the winner of the 2012 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition: Victoria Wolf, a student at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, MD.  Victoria's artwork, a painting entitled "In the Hands of Liberty," will be on view in the Capitol for one year along with the winning entries of Congressional Art Competition contests from districts throughout the country.

"Each year, students from the Fifth District submit exceptional artwork for the Congressional Art Competition, and I'd like to thank each of the participants for their outstanding submissions," Congressman Hoyer said. "I am pleased to announce that the selection panel has chosen β€˜In the Hands of Liberty' by Victoria Wolf to represent the Fifth District this year, a painting that features text of a section of the U.S. Constitution. It is a wonderful painting, and I'm proud of Victoria and all Fifth District participants for their talent and creativity."

Through the annual Congressional Art Competition, Members of Congress showcase the artistic talent of high school students from their districts. This spring, Congressman Hoyer sent letters to all of the high schools throughout the Fifth District announcing the Congressional Art Competition and outlining the rules for artwork submission. A selection panel comprised of members of the Fifth
District arts community – including art teachers and professional artists – reviewed each submission before selecting Victoria's piece to represent the Fifth District.
