Hoyer Announces Departure of Longtime Senior Advisor John Bohanan

WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today announcing that his longtime Senior Advisor, John Bohanan, departed his staff Wednesday, September 30, to join Cornerstone Government Affairs as a consultant:

"John Bohanan has been an extraordinary member of my staff for more than two decades, serving first as my District Director and then as a Senior Advisor. I have been fortunate to have had the benefit of his knowledge and expertise on issues affecting Maryland's Fifth District, and his service has made a real and lasting impact on our communities.

"In particular, John's knowledge of military installations in Southern Maryland has been invaluable, as has been his help not only saving thousands of jobs at Pax River, Webster Field, and Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center during the last BRAC round in the 1990s but encouraging the creation of thousands more.  His work over the years helped establish Pax River as the Navy's premier aircraft research, development, test and evaluation center.

"As a Member of the Maryland General Assembly representing St. Mary's County for fifteen years, John made education and economic development his top priorities.  He served with distinction on the Budget and Appropriations Committee and chaired the State's committee tasked with ensuring the accessibility and affordability of higher education opportunities for Maryland students while promoting policies to bring national attention to Maryland's world-class colleges and universities. He fought for funding for the third building at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center and advocated for the UMD Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Site in Southern Maryland, which is expected to bring jobs to the region. John also served on the Judith P. Hoyer Blue Ribbon Commission on Early Child Care and Education, supporting early childhood learning and the development of Maryland's Judy Centers, which have benefited thousands of low-income families across our state.

"John was instrumental in preventing a proposed wind turbine project from undermining both the mission of Pax River and our country's national security. He has been, and will continue to be, an effective voice for Southern Maryland, and his advocacy and forward-looking vision for the region will surely be felt for years to come.   

"John's work both as an outstanding member of my staff and as a senior member of our state legislature was not only critical to helping serve the people of Maryland's Fifth Congressional District but the entire State of Maryland. As a result of his tireless efforts, our State is a leader in education, the environment, and job creation, and the entire country has benefited from his advocacy for our national defense.

"I will miss having him on my team as a trusted and dependable advisor working on issues important to the Fifth District, and I wish him well in his next pursuits.
