Hoyer Announces $2.25 Million in Funding for South Capitol Gateway

November 18, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) announced that the House of Representatives passed the FY 2006 Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, and District of Columbia Appropriations Conference Report, which includes $2.25 million to support the rehabilitation of South Capitol Street/Frederick Douglass Bridge.

"Revitalizing South Capitol Street and overhauling the Frederick Douglass Bridge have long been priorities of mine and will be a boon to residents from all over the region when they are completed, including the thousands of people who commute daily between Maryland's 5th Congressional District and the District of Columbia.

"Because the freeway system proposed for the District of Columbia was never finished, South Capitol Street and the Southeast-Southwest Freeway are incomplete fragments of that transportation network. This funding will help pay for structural repairs and safety improvements of South Capitol Street and the Frederick Douglass Bridge from the Southeast-Southwest Freeway (I-395/I-695) to Firth Sterling Avenue and will improve access to Washington, DC while increasing the safety of residents, commuters and visitors as they travel into the city."

Congressman Hoyer, together with Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), was instrumental in securing $123 million earlier this year for revitalizing the South Capitol Street Corridor in the 6-year transportation reauthorization bill. In addition, Congressman Hoyer has secured more than $30 million over the years for projects to improve the water quality of the Anacostia River and to restore the health and natural beauty of the river and the surrounding natural resources. Congressman Hoyer also secured $500,000 in federal funds to conduct a study of the South Capitol Street Corridor, and secured $12.25 million in fiscal years 2004 and 2005 for the rehabilitation of South Capitol Street and the Frederick Douglass Bridge.
