Hoyer, Alsobrooks Tour FEMA-Run Mass Vaccination Site in Greenbelt, Highlight Vaccination Equity Efforts

April 8, 2021

GREENBELT, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) and Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks participated in a tour of the Greenbelt mass vaccination site, a FEMA-run site located at the Greenbelt Metro Station. Rep. Hoyer previously joined in calls for FEMA to establish a mass vaccination site in Prince George's County, which has suffered from a disproportionate number of COVID-19 infections, deaths, and low vaccination rates.

"I was glad to tour Greenbelt's mass vaccination site today and see its operations first-hand as we ramp up our equitable vaccination efforts and get more vaccines in the arms of Prince Georgians," said Congressman Hoyer. "I advocated strongly for a FEMA-backed mass vaccination site in Prince George's County following unacceptably low vaccination numbers, and I was pleased that this site was approved and established right off the Greenbelt Metro for greater access and convenience.

"This pandemic has impacted Prince George's families in devastating ways, illustrating the clear, longstanding racial inequities that have exacerbated this crisis for Black and Latino residents," continued Congressman Hoyer. "More must be done eliminate deep-seated racial inequities in our public health infrastructure, and I will continue to prioritize the safety of Prince Georgians by fighting to ensure vaccine access is equitable. With this new mass-vaccination site, I am hopeful that Prince George's County can finally turn the page on the hardship too many have faced and ensure the wellbeing and prosperity of all the families who live here."

"We want to thank Congressman Hoyer and our federal delegation for advocating for this FEMA-operated vaccination center in Prince George's County," said County Executive Alsobrooks. "It is critical that we continue to administer vaccines both quickly and equitably, and this new site helps us accomplish that goal by being accessible via public transportation. We are excited that more Prince Georgians will be able to get vaccinated and be Proud to be Protected from COVID-19."

According to the Maryland Department of Health, just 12.8 percent Prince Georgians are fully vaccinated. The center opened just yesterday and has the capacity to administer 3,000 doses per day. This is the first federally-operated site in Maryland.
