During National Safety Month, Hoyer Tours Summer Youth Programs at YMCA in Ft. Washington

June 26, 2006
FT. WASHINGTON, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today visited YMCA's Prince George's County headquarters in Ft. Washington to observe its summer youth programs and discuss the importance of giving kids productive opportunities to learn, be active, and stay out of trouble.

"One of my greatest responsibilities as a Member of Congress is the safety of my constituents," Hoyer said. "While that requires fighting to put more police on the street and reducing gang violence, it also means helping working families find a productive place for their children to be supervised during the summer months."

June marks the 10th Anniversary of National Safety Month. This annual observance reflects the National Safety Council's historical commitment to influencing people to adopt and maintain safe and healthy behaviors in all aspects of their lives.

"Summer is a critical time to stress safety to our young people," Hoyer said. "Whether it's wearing a helmet when biking, looking out for each other around the pool, or staying properly hydrated during a sporting event, kids can take simple steps this season to prevent injuries and save lives."

YMCA Potomac Overlook opened in October of 2005 and has been flourishing in membership and programming. "This facility is doing a tremendous service for our district," Hoyer said. "I will continue to do all I can to see that the YMCA carries out its mission here in Prince George's County."
