Congressman Hoyer Statement on One Year Anniversary of Tragic 2009 Metro Crash
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD) issued the following statement on the one year anniversary of the tragic Washington Metro crash that claimed the lives of nine riders and injured many more:
"A year ago today, a crash on the Washington area's Metro system killed nine people, and our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones in that tragic accident. While the lives lost—among 13 passengers and Metro workers to die in accidents last year—are irreplaceable, we can honor them by ensuring that Metro lives up to the highest standards of safety. I look forward to the National Transportation Safety Board's final report on the crash, which is expected in July, and will insist that Metro follow its recommendations. It is essential that Congress provide Metro with the reliable funding it needs to keep its trains and system up-to-date and in the best working order. I am also hopeful that Congress will pursue the goal of strengthening safety oversight for Metro and transit systems nationwide. The best thing that can come out of last year's tragedy is more protection for passengers on America's Subway, and on transit lines across the country."
