Congressman Hoyer Participates in National Night Out
SHADY SIDE, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) tonight attended the 17th Annual Shady Side National Night Out (NNO), where he spoke with residents, law enforcement personnel, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials about their successful efforts to make their communities better and safer places to live. "National Night Out is a great opportunity for community members and law enforcement officials to come together, to listen to one another and to interact one-on-one while having fun at the same time," stated Rep. Hoyer. "For 17 years, the families of the Shady Side neighborhood have come together for National Night Out in support of efforts to keep their community safe. I applaud the local community for organizing National Night Out and for the event's successful growth, both around the nation and here in the 5th Congressional District. National Night Out provides the perfect backdrop for augmenting neighborhood communication and involvement," continued Hoyer. "If a change within a community needs to occur, community members should be able to talk to each other and to work together towards a common goal. The benefits of NNO extend well beyond this one night, and I am pleased that so many in our local communities continue to take an active interest in making them a better place to live." National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). NNO is designed to raise crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; and strengthen police-community partnerships that are essential to deterring crime. Last year's NNO campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 36 million people participated in National Night Out 2009. ### |
