WASHINGTON - Congressman Hoyer announced today that the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a federal Fire Grant in the amount of $86,589 through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Caucus, Congressman Hoyer was very active in helping establish and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which helps local fire departments in Maryland and across the country buy equipment and provide adequate training.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives last evening passed the fiscal year 2005 Defense Appropriations conference report, agreed to by both the House and the Senate, that contains funding important to Patuxent River Naval Air Station and Southern Maryland. This funding was added to the Defense Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2005 at Congressman Hoyer's request and was not included in the President's defense funding request for fiscal year 2005. Hoyer is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and worked to ensure these funds remained in the final version of this bill.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON - Congressman Steny Hoyer today congratulated the winners of the 63rd race of the "Greater Washington Soap Box Derby" which took place on the grounds of the United States Capitol in June. All three winners reside in the 5th Congressional District. Haley Luense of Accokeek was the winner of the Stock Division race, Robert "Robbie" Reuss of Waldorf was the winner of the Super Stock Division race, and Robert McDaniel of Bowie won the Masters Division ace. All three will compete in the national competition held in Akron, Ohio on July 31st.________________________________________________________________________

Congressman Hoyer was joined by Representative Bob Menendez, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and the highest ranking Hispanic member of Congress, and Representatives Al Wynn and Chris Van Hollen. WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny Hoyer today signed a petition to force the full House of Representatives to consider a common sense proposal that would give the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the power to negotiate lower prescription drug prices on behalf seniors enrolled in Medicare. This provision was eliminated from the Republican Medicare legislation signed into law at the end of last year. This petition would also guarantee that HHS offer at least one nationwide Medicare-administered prescription drug benefit.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON, DC Congressman Steny Hoyer released the following statement today after the National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Assessment of Options for Extending the Life of the Hubble Space Telescope released their interim report recommending a new manned servicing mission to repair and extend the life of the Hubble Space Telescope. The Academy conducted their assessment at the request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).________________________________________________________________________
