Hoyer Statement on Passage of Bipartisan Agreement to Open Government, Ensure America Pays Its Bills

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement this evening after the House passed the bipartisan agreement to end the government shutdown and ensure America pays its bills:

“For sixteen days, working families in my district and around the country have been significantly impacted by the government shutdown and uncertainty about whether America would default on its obligations for the first time in history. It was deeply disappointing that partisanship led to this unnecessary shutdown and the brink of default, and that our economy, small businesses, and working families paid the price. While we should have never put federal employees in this position – unable to go to work on behalf of the American people and unsure of when they would receive pay – I’m pleased that all federal workers will be able to get back on the job and receive back pay. Now that we have voted to reopen the government and ensure we pay our nation’s bills, I’m hopeful we will reach a bipartisan, long-term solution to replace the sequester and put our nation back on a sound fiscal path.”
