Hoyer Celebrates the Benefits of the Expanded Child Tax Credit for Fifth District Families

June 21, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC - On Child Tax Credit Awareness Day, Congressman Hoyer (MD-05) joined in promoting the benefits of the American Rescue Plan's expanded Child Tax Credit for Fifth District families. This major assistance puts money directly in the pockets of families throughout our state. The first installment of automatic direct payments will be sent to most Maryland families on July 15. Eligible families will receive $300 per month for children under the age of 6 and $250 per month for children between the ages of 6 and 17.

"The American Rescue Plan's historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit will have a positive impact on thousands of working families in the Fifth District," said Congressman Hoyer. "The automatic payments will help Marylanders pay for child care, keep up on their bills, and put food on the table. I'm pleased that 132,400 children – nearly 75% of children in the Fifth District – will directly benefit from this expanded tax credit, helping hundreds of thousands of families. Furthermore, 5,5000 children in the Fifth District will be lifted out of poverty, including 2,300 children under the age of six."

"For many, these benefits will automatically be dispersed on July 15 without any further action needed," continued Congressman Hoyer. "I'm pleased that so many Fifth District residents will benefit from the expanded Child Tax Credit, which will help expand equitable economic opportunity."

The enhanced Child Tax Credit will provide eligible families a total of $3,600 for each child under the age of 6, and $3,000 for each child between the ages 6 and 17. Payments will be dispersed monthly beginning July 15. Single parents making up to $75,000 and filing their taxes as individuals, those filing as heads of household making up to $112,500, and married joint filers making up to $150,000 a year are eligible for these monthly automatic installment payments.

Nearly all families in Maryland should receive their monthly payment beginning July 15 without any further action required. However, families that don't usually file tax returns should register for the Child Tax Credit and update important information by using the IRS Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool today.
