Transportation and Infrastructure

Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District is one of the fastest growing areas in the State of Maryland.  Congressman Hoyer has worked very closely with state and local officials to ensure that our transportation infrastructure is prepared to meet the needs of Fifth District residents, businesses, and Federal facilities.

Over the years, Congressman Hoyer has helped secure the reconstruction of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, the restoration of the Suitland Parkway, federal funding for Metro rail capital improvements, and the Southern Maryland Commuter Bus Initiative. He continues to secure funding for the ongoing construction of the Purple Line, a 16.2 mile light rail line which will connect Prince George’s County and Montgomery County.

In 2017, Congressman Hoyer sponsored legislation to establish the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission to improve the safety and reliability of Metro. He believes that a sustainable and reliable source of funding is the only way to address Metro’s long-term capital needs.

Maryland Delegation Members Urge Purple Line Contractors to Forge Project Labor Agreement with Construction Workers

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) joined Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Congressmen John Sarbanes (MD-03), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), and Jamie Raskin (MD-08) to urge Maryland Transit Solutions (MTS), the group of contractors leading the development of the Purple Line, to complete a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with the project’s construction workers. In their letter to MTS Project Director Terry Gohde, the lawmakers stressed the need for a PLA to ensure quality and reliable work. Maryland workers had previously secured a PLA with the prior contractors on the project; however, the new contractors have not reached a similar agreement. The lawmakers urged MTS to do right by the workers affected by the transition in the contract by reaching a PLA, and requested a written response from MTS by July 12 detailing its efforts to secure an agreement with the project’s workers.

Maryland Delegation Announces Over $120 Million in American Rescue Plan Funding For WMATA

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Congressmen John Sarbanes (MD-03), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and David Trone (MD-06) announced $120,145,016 in additional American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Funding will help strengthen Metro train operations and rider safety, avoid service cuts, and increase workforce retention.

Hoyer Secures Funding to Dredge Herring Bay and Rockhold Creek

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced $2.15 million in funding from the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge Herring Bay and Rockhold Creek in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. This funding was provided in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, brought to the House Floor by Congressman Hoyer in his role as Majority Leader, and through additional Congressional appropriations. Silting at the entrance to the federal channel created a dangerous situation for boaters looking to navigate the channel. More information about the project can be found here.
